    Since 2016, I have been contracted by various companies and clients to enhance digital content for their products or websites. I have been responsible for everything from content audits to site architecture to style guide creation.

    • Disney: Support app and web content sustainment initiatives, own the creation of template style guides for use across design, marketing, and other partner teams
    • Google: Develop robust content strategy for digital help content across web and app
    • Wells Fargo: Create and write UX microcopy for commercial banking products
    • All Clients: Edit and write microcopy to improve UX standards as well as enhance branding across digital products

    While under contract at Disney, one of the main challenges the content team faced was matching partner expectations for new pages on web or app with what was technically possible within in their set timelines and budgets. There was a lack of education for those outside teams who weren't privy to or had no previous experiences with the development process of publishing new content.

     

    To address this discrepency, I was tasked with creating a template use guide for Disney's available app pages. Once I started working on this, I realized the same need existed across the suite of websites as well and I added the web element to the use guide.

    Background / Challenge

    Business Goals:

    • Provide a centralized guide to educate various partner groups on the templates available for use in our customer-facing apps (partner's request)
    • Create and own a centralized guide to further educate various partner groups on the templates available for use across our customer-facing websites (my addition)
    User Goals:
    • Provide internal-facing guidelines for partners to reference when developing digital strategy for new initiatives
    • Reduce development timelines by providing more available information to all parties involved, therefore getting content out faster and in the most effective layout to better serve users.

    Approach / Solution

    • Gather data from various design and development teams regarding budgets, timelines, and resources needed to produce each template type
    • Collaborate with partners and design leads driving app and web content development
    • Document the necessary information in an easy to consume manner while also considering the various needs and interests of all parties
    • Create a finalized template use guide for all partners to access that can be easily updated for future iterations

    Data / Results

    • Content team members were able to better guide partners during early exploration sessions to the best template match for their content needs
    • Countless hours were saved by eliminating back and forth between the content team and various stakeholders over template choice, and also even eliminated the need for content design input in some cases entirely (therefore allowing the very small content design team to focus on bigger tasks and asks).
    • By including budgetary needs and resource allocation within the guide, partners have had more clarity when it comes to content choices and the content team's expertise has become more transparent and appaparent.
    • The Design team also integrated the template use guide into their overall style and branding guides so that more partners have access to and can better understand content design decisions.
